Morten Harket was born on September 14, 1959 in Kongsberg. He was second born
to a family that
would come to include four boys and sister. The father, Reidar, comes from Vennesla and is now a chief
physician/director of medicine. His mother, Henny, comes form Skien and is
a newly educated home economics teacher after having been a stay-at-home mother
for many years. The family moved to Heggedal in Asker when Morten was five years old, but moved soon again to
Gullhella in the same county. Morten's parents are personally Christian and active in chuch work.
Consequently, Morten grew up under a religious influence. Morten has needed
security because life has not only treated him
carefully. Morten's first big musical experience was in Kongsberg when he was three years
old. He heard a local band play. With his sensitive l disposition, he took it all in - the intense music, the uniforms, the rhythm. He felt a kind of pillar of power bolt down
his spine, (and) an roaring feeling in his chest. He laughed and cried in turns and entered into the music to such a
degree that the band conductor responded (to him). He took Morten up onto his shoulders and let him conduct the band together with him. The whole
of the little three-year-old's body was 'on fire.' Morten's father is musically gifted and chose between a
classical pianist career and medical
studies. Morten received piano lessons from the time he was a young boy but he didn't like the authoritarian style (of the lessons). Han
practiced little and didn't learn the notes. But he composed and play with the instrument feely and with relish - without anything more coming from it
than that his teacher gave up! Morten managed to live happily ignorant of pop music all the way to the summer before he was to begin high school.
It was then that Jimi Hendrix and Uriah Heep changed his life.
"At that time I was
collecting butterflies and cultivating orchids. I was completely besotted with
this. Then I got a collection of Uriah

Heep records, and after that, there was only one band in the whole world! I
immediately started my own band together with my brother, Haakon
(note from Ingerid: the co-author of Saa blaaser det paa jorden and the second
youngest of the five children). I thought we were the
only band in the whole of
Norway. Completely genuinely - I had no
idea there were other bands. In that band, I felt music as something
theatrical, bombastic. The music entered me, and I sang. I could go for hours
without any idea of where I was. It was unbelievable.
I will wager that it beats every possible drug trip. Only the strongest lovemaking has something of the same strength." Morten was lead singer in a number of bands. "Soldier blue" was among
of them. Morten Harket wanted to be a priest, but stopped his studies at
the Theological Faculty. Together with Magne Furuholmen and Paal Waaktaar, he
created the group a-ha in 1982. The video for 'Take on Me'
took a-ha to the top of the Billboard charts in the
USA, the first Norwegian group ever.
Extensive tours and new hits established
a-ha as a big name in pop and rock.(To read about a-ha history go to the
A-ha official site ) In 1994-1998 a-ha took a break but came
back in 2000 and released 2 albums since then ("Minor Earth, Major
Sky", 2000 and "Lifelines", 2002 - both have a success in
Europe).
Morten Harket is now well underway with his own solo career, and is writing
both the music and some of the lyrics himself. He released three solo albums
and a number of singles. By nature Harket is an artistic type, with interests
that range from drawing and painting to orchids, butterflies, music and cars."
Morten Harket is owner of unique 5 octaves range voice. He was awarded by Best
european vocalist title in the 80s
